Peaceful Water Views at Manatee Lagoon in Palm Beach, Florida
On our latest adventure, we visited Manatee Lagoon – An FPL Eco-Discovery Center in Palm Beach, Florida. This donation-only attraction is one of the best spots in the area to learn about and (hopefully!) see Florida’s gentle giants, the manatees.
In my full YouTube video, I take you along as we explore the grounds, enjoy the peaceful views, and spend some time looking out over the water for manatees and fish. Even when the manatees don’t make an appearance, the lagoon itself is a relaxing place to stop, unwind, and appreciate Florida’s natural beauty.
What Is Manatee Lagoon?
Manatee Lagoon is a public education center created by Florida Power & Light (FPL). It’s located next to their Riviera Beach Clean Energy Center, which releases warm water into the lagoon. During the colder months (November through March), manatees are drawn to this warmer water, making it one of the best spots in Palm Beach to see them.
The facility offers:
Indoor exhibits about manatees, their habitats, and conservation
Viewing decks overlooking the lagoon
Outdoor seating areas to relax and take in the view
- Educational programs and family-friendly events
- An Autism Friendly Environment - More on that below
Best Time to See Manatees
While the lagoon is beautiful year-round, manatee sightings are most common in winter months when water temperatures dip below 68°F. That’s when these gentle creatures gather here in large numbers.
If you visit during the off-season like we did, you may or may not see manatees, but it’s still worth the trip for the scenery, peaceful atmosphere, and educational exhibits.
Why We Loved Our Visit
What struck me most during our visit was how calm and serene the lagoon feels. Watching the water ripple, spotting fish, and just sitting for a while gave us a chance to slow down and connect with nature.
It’s also a very family-friendly destination. With free entry, shaded seating, and a welcoming environment, it’s the kind of place you can enjoy with kids, grandparents, or even on your own if you’re looking for a quiet escape.
And the Most Important - An Autism-Friendly Business
Something that stood out to me was that Manatee Lagoon is recognized as an Autism-Friendly Business. This meant a lot to our family, as my grandson, who is on the spectrum, joined us that day. He did get a little cranky during the visit (our fault for making it our second stop before lunch!), but the center itself felt like a welcoming and calm space for families of all needs. It’s a comfort to know they’re committed to making visits accessible for everyone.
Make It a Day Trip
If you’re planning a visit to Manatee Lagoon, you can easily combine it with nearby attractions:
Loggerhead Marinelife Center – A must for sea turtle lovers
The River Center – Nature trails, aquariums, and picnic spots
Together, they make for a wonderful, budget-friendly day of exploring Florida’s marine life and waterways.
